Poison-free Rat Control In Whistler
About The Use of Rodenticide (Rat Poisons) In Whistler
The use of anticoagulant rodenticide has been a matter of some consternation for cities across B.C. with more than a dozen of them voting to ban their use. At issue is the fact that secondary poisoning is killing predators who feed on the rodents. Owls, for example, may eat approximately 3 rats per night and over 1,000 per year. The anticoagulants in their prey are resulting in the deaths of these predators, causing the rat population to grow overall. Now, new measures that are more eco-friendly are being put into place to effectively control the pest population without endangering other local wildlife.
Resort Municipality of Whistler
Many municipalities across BC are considering banning the use of rodenticide (rat poison) on their city’s property. The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is dealing with this issue. On September 1, 2020, the municipal council was given an information presentation by Sea to Sky Injured Wildlife, regarding rodent poisons. This issue is still under consideration in Whistler.
This is a complicated issue. Balancing the humane treatment of all animals with the protection of people’s homes and businesses from the real hazard brought by a rodent infestation requires the services of an experienced professional.
